We used to live across the street at the Golden Gateway apartments - so I consider that my neighborhood - in a weird, urban way.

I've visited many a Farmer's Market - around the world - and I gotta say San Francisco's is absolutely the best. I guess I'm starting to miss home.

So seeing this photo by Derek kind of made me homesick.

Well cie la vie! Off to Paris tomorrow.

SuperNOva 2004

So I spoke at SuperNova 2004 today on Digital Identity. I gito to hang out with the original blogging.la (blogrolling.com meister) Jason DeFillippo - who was taking photos like a madman, as I sang opera and in general - cuased as much commotion as possible.

Here's a shot of Ray Ozzie - who in case you don't know - invented Lotus Notes and is the founder and CEO of Groove.

Tomorrow I get to hear Clay Shirky.

Andrew Leonard has written an excellent overview of social networking and "just what a friend is" in Salon. It's a two part series.

Andrew kind of took all my statements at face value, but it would have been nice to dive a little deeper into the various schemes being implemented right now and what'll be possible in the future - in so far as levels of relationship granularity.

Some folks just want a zero or one, take it or leave it approach to relationships - while others (like our PeopleAggregator project) support many levels of relationships. No matter what, as long as we apply these social networks within particular contexts - like gaming, being Gay or within a virtual Silicon Valley - the granularity of relationships will come.

It's the only way to model real-life.

Skinnable Desktop applications in php

Joel De Gan has recently been Slashdotted - linking an article he wrote on a project he did for work.

The project entailed building a stand alonbe desktop app with php (on the client side) using PHP-GTK. Pretty nerdy - but it works.

The idea is that stand alone apps, running a full copy of php - can reside on your client machine - monitoring webapps, web services or just about anything else.

RVW status

Just received this letter from Alf Eaton. I had asked him:

Ive had some renewed interest in OpenReviews. Blogware is getting ready to go gold (v 1.) and I have a few others (including SixApart) who are interested. Have there been any changes to RVW? Attempt to get it working in rdf and flow through RSS 1.0?

Alf's reply:

I have been thinking about RVW on and off, though I haven't got round to writing down any changes yet. I'm still not sure of the best way to go about it, and in particular the need for it to be a part of RSS feeds or as a separate entity (which could then more easily be RDF).

I don't have any schemas - I'm not an expert in that kind of thing, and I haven't seen anyone propose any changes to the format which suggests that no-one's trying to aggregate reviews yet. However, I'll have another look at it this weekend, and see if I can put together another draft format that maybe some of the people implementing it would be able to comment on.

So here's my public response to Alf:

OK coolio.

We've got at leasta starting pint for schemas (see below.) Having the schemas be independent of the subscription format is key - so teh same data can flow through BOTH RSS 1.0/Atom (rdf) and RSS 2.0 (xml.)

So let us know of any changes to RVW to accomplish this goal - besides that - and it's deployment time.

Next up - ESF. :-) After usage sceanrios of course....
